If you are interested in Computer Science, then we think Missouri State is the right choice for you. We have one of the best Computer Science curriculums in this part of the country, and are one of only two colleges in the state of Missouri whose Computer Science curriculum is accredited by ABET, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Our graduates have been quite successful in obtaining programmer and programmer/analyst positions upon graduation, and consistently earn high starting salaries.  Check our employment page for company information.

Aside from our outstanding Computer Science curriculum, Missouri State has many features that will probably interest you. To find out more, just browse the Missouri State homepage. How Do I Begin to Plan my College Career?

Well, in order to make the most of your college experience, you should give it some consideration during high school. Once you graduate high school, you should be well prepared to begin your college career.

What high school courses should I take?

You should be aware that the Computer Science program requires considerable calculus and calculus-based physics. You can best prepare yourself for this program by taking as much college preparatory mathematics as possible. High school physical science courses (such as physics and chemistry) are also appropriate preparatory courses. In addition, good communication skills are highly desirable, so you are encouraged to take courses that will develop and enhance your reading, composition, and speaking abilities.

How important is my high school math?

Very!  It is particularly important that you perform as well as you can on the Math portion of the ACT.  Here's why.  CSC 131 Introduction to Computer Science has a prerequisite of Pre-Calculus.  Your Math Placement at Missouri State is determined by your Math subscore on the ACT.   If your placement indicates eligibility for Calculus, you can take CSC 131 your first semester.  If you are eligible for Pre-Calculus, you cannot take CSC 131 until your second semester.  Calculus in college is in general much more challenging than in high school, so do not take math placement for granted.

If you are eligible to take either College Algebra (MTH 135) or Pre-Calculus (MTH 138), you must choose Pre-Calculus!  You cannot receive credit toward graduation for both College Algebra and Pre-Calculus.

If your eligibility is lower than Pre-Calculus, you will not be able to take CSC 131 until at least your third semester.  Start with Intermediate Algebra (MTH 103) then take Pre-Calculus.

How should I plan my college schedule?

When beginning to plan your schedule of courses at Missouri State, you should begin with a mixture of different courses from general education requirements, math & physics requirements, and computer science degree requirements.

We have defined a flowchart outlining all of the requirements that need to be met in order to get your BS in Computer Science from Missouri State. We also have a sample 4 year schedule, and a complete listing of Computer Science courses.  You can get more information from the Missouri State Undergraduate catalog Computer Science page.

When you enter the Computer Science major, you will be assigned an advisor from within the Computer Science department to help you plan your college career. Your advisor will help you plan the best course of action to take, so be sure to use this valuable resource.
