Requesting Reference Letters

Thank you for considering me as a professional reference.

I would be pleased to assist, but please note that I can only provide an effective recommendation letter if we have collaborated directly—such as on a thesis, project leading to a peer-reviewed publication, patent, funding, or award. Simply being my friend, colleague, student or receiving a good grade in my course does not provide sufficient basis for a compelling letter. I encourage you to choose references who are familiar with your work in a meaningful way.

If you believe I am well-positioned to write a strong letter for you, please send a courteous email including the following:

  • Your full name and student ID.
  • A detailed summary of our interactions (e.g., courses, GA/TA/RA roles, projects, research, grants, publications) with relevant timelines and your contributions.
  • A list of key points and brief details you wish to be included in the letter, along with specific examples demonstrating these qualities.
  • A link to the job posting or program details, and a passionate explanation of your interest in this opportunity.
  • Your resume/CV.

Please allow at least 7 business days for me to prepare a useful letter.

All the best!
